Sialic Acid Content of the Erythrocyte and of an Ascites

چکیده
92.6 (19). Sialic acids have been found on the eryth rocyte membranes of a number of vertebrate species (5, 7, 192). Viral or bacterial neuramini dases, enzymes which cleave the a-ketosidic link age between a terminal sialic acid group and a sugar or sugar derivative (9), can liberate free sialic acid from such red cell membranes (5, 7). The surface of the mammalian erythrocyte is neg atively charged with a reported isoelectric point of about pH 92.0 (1, 8). Following enzymatic re moval of sialic acid from the human erythrocyte, the isoelectric point of the red cell is greatly in creased, indicating that these groups are primarily responsible for the negative charge on the erythro cyte membrane (5, 7). The mouse Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT) cell also has a negatively charged surface with a meas

Assessment of Sialic Acid Distribution in Mouse Epididymis
Previous studies have shown that epididymal epithelium and its secretions are critical for sperm maturation. These secretions contain many glycoconjugates with sialic acid terminal sugar. This terminal sugar by interveining in cellular interactions and masking surface receptors, has an important role in sperm maturation and protection. Moreover lectins have been employed as useful probes to det...
متن کاملSub-acute Exposure to Benzene Accelerates the Aging Process of Red Blood Cells; an In vivo Study
Background: The well-known toxic effects of benzene toxicity are bone marrow depression, reduction in blood cell counts, and induction of leukemia and aplastic anemia. This study was designed to evaluate biomarkers of aging in red blood cells (RBCs). Methods: Mice were exposed to benzene (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg/day) orally for 28 days. A group of benzene-exposed mice were injected intraperiton...
متن کاملErythrocyte disaggregation shear stress, sialic acid, and cell aging in humans.
Erythrocyte aggregation, which plays an important role in the physiological behavior of blood fluidity, was found to be enhanced in hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. While the role of macromolecule bridging force has been widely described, cellular factors related to membrane sialic acid content, which might contribute to the negative charge of cell surface causing the repulsion of erythro...
متن کاملRelationship Between Total and Lipid-bound Serum Sialic Acid and Some Tumor Markers
Background: Increased levels of total and lipid-associated sialic acid (TSA and LASA) have been reported in the sera of patients with benign or malignant tumors and also could be regarded as newly important clinical criteria for the diagnosis of cancer. This study has investigated the differences of TSA and LASA contents between cancer patients and healthy individuals and evaluated their correl...
متن کاملThe Effect of Sialic Acid on miR-320a and let-7e Expression in Human Glial Cell Line
Introduction: Sialic acid plays pivotal roles in various critical physiological events at molecular and cellular levels and also pathological processes. Changes in sialic acid concentration are observed in many pathological processes; for example, there are some available data on the evaluated level of sialic acid and neurodegenerative prevalence. It can be proposed that sialic acid can play a ...
